Keeping a current customer often costs less than finding a new one. A loyalty program can help bring shoppers back for a second or third order. Most merchants do not want to build the reward system from scratch.

Smile.io is a Shopify loyalty and rewards app. It offers points, rewards, referrals, and VIP programs.

We installed it on a development store. We completed setup, made a points program, tested rewards, and checked the design controls.

Our main question was simple. Is Smile.io a good loyalty app for a store that wants to launch quickly?

Key Takeaways

  • Launching a basic program is easy: Guided setup covered the program name, brand colour, points, and storefront launcher.
  • Points and redemption worked: We set a points reward and created a discount that could be used at checkout.
  • Branding control has limits: The preview had scrolling problems. The mobile view missed our custom icon, and banner text colour could not be changed.
  • Pricing climbs with order volume: Plans start at $15 per month for up to 500 monthly orders. VIP tiers and checkout rewards sit on the $199 Growth plan.

Our Verdict

Smile.io is a strong option for merchants who want loyalty rewards without building a complex system. Setup guided us through the main steps. We made a points program, styled the reward panel, and added the app embed to the Shopify theme.

The basic loyalty program was simple to launch. Styling was the weaker part.

The preview had scrolling issues. The mobile launcher did not match the desktop view, and banner text colour had limited control.

Smile.io is worth considering as a starting point for points and rewards. Stores with strict design rules should expect a few limits.

What Smile.io Offers

Smile.io helps Shopify merchants build reward programs. Customers earn points and trade them for rewards that may encourage another purchase.

The app includes:

  • points-based rewards,
  • a customer rewards panel on the storefront,
  • referral programs,
  • VIP programs,
  • and loyalty analytics and reporting.

Some of the more advanced features depend on the plan you choose.

What We Tested

We tested Smile.io on a Shopify development store. The test covered install, setup, points, theme links, the customer reward panel, redemption, and design controls.

We did not fully test referrals or VIP programs because they were disabled in our setup. We also did not test long-term use, support, or enterprise tools.

This is a Level 1 — Full Hands-On Test of the core points program.

What Public Sources Add

Our points and redemption test is the main basis for this review. On September 14, 2026, we also checked Smile.io’s Shopify listing and pricing page.

Those sources describe referrals, VIP programs, app links, reports, and higher-plan controls. We did not treat those claims as proof.

Referral and VIP use, support, and enterprise tools remain outside this test.

Getting Started With Smile.io

Smile.io instructions for enabling the app embed in Shopify theme settings

Installation required Shopify permission approval before we could open the app. Smile.io asked for access related to customer data, staff data, and store data.

The guided setup explained the main steps. We set the program name, brand colour, points rules, and storefront launcher. Smile.io also showed how to enable its app embed in Shopify’s theme editor.

We would call the setup medium difficulty. The guide was easy to follow, but a merchant still has several steps to finish before launch.

Creating a Points-Based Loyalty Program

Smile.io onboarding screen with 3, 5, and 10 percent points reward options

Smile.io makes purchase rewards simple to configure. During setup, we chose a percentage-based points reward.

The onboarding flow offered preset options:

  • 3% back in points,
  • 5% back in points,
  • and 10% back in points.

These presets can help a merchant launch quickly. We did not test more detailed earning rules.

The Customer Rewards Experience

After we enabled Smile.io, the rewards launcher appeared on the storefront.

Customers could open the loyalty panel and view their points. They could also see ways to earn and trade points for discounts.

We tested redemption and created a discount for checkout. The storefront panel was easy to understand as a shopper.

Customisation: Where We Hit Limits

Smile.io program branding setup with name, brand color, and text color controls

Smile.io lets merchants style the reward launcher and customer panel. Options include banner images, icons, launcher text, and brand colours.

Our test found three areas where more control would improve the experience.

Preview scrolling. The preview stayed fixed while we moved through the settings. Some lower areas were hard to reach at normal screen size. We had to reduce browser zoom to see them.

Mobile launcher icon. The desktop preview showed our custom icon. The mobile preview did not.

Header text colour. Text stayed white over our custom banner. We could not change it, which can make some banners hard to read.

These issues did not stop the program from working. Still, check the mobile view and banner text before launch.

Pricing: Cost Rises With Order Volume

Smile.io Essential, Standard, and Growth pricing plans shown in September 2026

We checked pricing in September 2026. Prices and plan limits can change, so confirm them before you buy.

Plan Price Key features shown
Essential $15/month Up to 500 monthly orders, loyalty page, rewards, analytics, one integration
Standard $79/month Up to 1,000 monthly orders, bonus events, product page points, segments, ROI insights
Growth $199/month Up to 2,500 monthly orders, VIP tiers, checkout rewards, advanced reports, unlimited integrations
Plus $999/month, billed annually Enterprise reporting, API access, priority support, SOC-2 compliance

The $15 plan gives smaller stores a starting point. More advanced tools require the higher plans.

Plan around monthly order volume. Each plan has an order limit, so a growing store can outgrow Essential quickly.

VIP tiers and checkout rewards also need higher plans. The $15 starting price may not reflect the cost of a mature loyalty program.

What We Liked

  • Guided onboarding: The setup flow makes launching a basic loyalty program easier for first-time users.
  • Simple points setup: Percentage-back presets let merchants create purchase rewards quickly.
  • Customer-friendly rewards panel: The storefront experience was easy for shoppers to understand, and redemption worked.
  • Scalable pricing: Multiple plans support different merchant stages.

What Could Be Better

  • More styling control: Merchants need a way to change header text colour over custom banners.
  • Preview experience: The customisation preview needs smoother scrolling behaviour.
  • Mobile consistency: The mobile launcher preview should match desktop behaviour.

Who Smile.io Is Best For

Smile.io is best for Shopify merchants who want to launch points and rewards quickly. It gives them a simple way to encourage repeat orders.

It is especially useful for stores that want a structured loyalty system without developing custom reward logic. The $15 Essential plan makes a small program affordable to start.

Who Should Consider an Alternative

Smile.io may be a poor fit if you need full design control or complex enterprise loyalty tools. A higher plan or extra custom work may be required.

We did not test referral or VIP programs. Test them before buying if they are central to your plan.

We also did not test competing loyalty apps, so we are not ranking alternatives here.

Final Verdict

Smile.io gives merchants a clear way to launch loyalty rewards. Setup, points, and customer redemption were simple in our test.

Styling is the main area to improve. The app needs better preview scrolling, a more consistent mobile view, and more text controls.

For stores that need a starting point for loyalty rewards, Smile.io is worth considering. Check the design limits before launch. Also choose a plan that fits your monthly order volume.
