Human Testing & Evidence
Testing level
- Level 2 — Partial Hands-On Test
Merchant decision question: Can a growing store stay on the $19 Standard plan, or will product and impression limits push the bill up?
What was tested: Admin inspection on a development store (Dawn theme, Shopify sample products) during the 14-day trial: onboarding (features, theme app embed, plan screen, sync, completion), dashboard, Filters, Data > Products, Merchandising > Synonyms, Analytics > Search requests, Settings > General, Billing.
What was not tested: Storefront filters/search, search quality, typo tolerance, AI search, creating synonyms/redirects/banners, Promote, page speed, support contact, paid plan/overage billing, uninstall.
Raw observations (from screenshots)
- Onboarding 1 — “Power up your storefront”: Collection page filters, Search page optimization (filters, custom sorting, pagination), Instant search suggestions (products, collections, pages). Settings can be fine-tuned after install. Get started / Go to dashboard.
- Onboarding 2 — “Set up your theme”: theme dropdown “Dawn (live)”; enable Sparq Filter & Search app embed, click Save, page updates automatically; Open theme editor / Skip for now.
- Onboarding 3 — “Select your plan”: 14-day free trial, full access until Oct 28, 2026; switch or cancel anytime; Standard / Premium / Enterprise cards (same as Billing); “I’ll choose a plan later” link.
- Onboarding 4 — “Setting things up”: Syncing store data, Setting up instant search, Creating filters on search pages, Creating filters on collection pages (all checked); large catalog can take a few minutes in background.
- Onboarding 5 — “You’re all set”: full product data synced shortly; Go to dashboard / Preview your store.
- Dashboard: Get started 1/3 (Set up filters, Set up search, Enable the app embed ✓). Impressions / Users / Empty searches, last 30 days, all 0 (07–13 Oct). App embed Active — live on Dawn. App block Optional — not added, embed already shows Sparq. Sync status + Request sync. Billing: Trial, 14 days left. Nav: Filters, Data, Merchandising, Analytics, Settings, Billing.
- Filters: Tags, Product Type, Vendor, Collections, Availability, Product Category (System, Multi Select List, on); Price Filter (System, Slider, on); Color (Option, Multi Select List, on); Discount (Custom, Multi Select List, off, description “Discount”). Intro: filters from tags, metadata, variant data or any field; UI types multi-select checkboxes, radio buttons, color swatches, sliders. Drag to reorder; off keeps configuration but hides from shoppers. Add filter button.
- Data: tabs Products, Collections, Pages, Sync setting, Sync logs; search records; Show all; product rows (Gift Card, snowboards) with SKU column and Promote dropdown.
- Merchandising: tabs Synonyms, Redirects, Banners. Two-way synonyms explanation (pants/trousers). Import, Add synonyms. No synonyms configured.
- Analytics: tabs Search requests, Search users, Empty searches; Total searches 0, Search/day 0, Search/user ~0; Top queries, Empty queries (explains fix via synonyms or tags); note that low counts indicate a missing search box.
- Settings > General: tabs General settings, Dropdown settings, Collection page, Integrations, Translation. Storefront toggles on: Show filters on collection pages, Show Sparq search results page, Search dropdown (off = theme’s own). Product grid selector (advanced), optional, empty = automatic. Hide out of stock items: off. Hide products by tags. Search fields include tags, productType, vendor (list partly obscured).
- Billing: Standard $19/mon (2,500 products, 30,000 impressions, Basic Search Features, Collection Page Filters, Meta Tag Filters, Synonyms, Analytics 30 days, Email support, Limited Third-Party Integrations); Premium $59 (7,500 products, 100,000 impressions, Advanced Search Features, Collection Page Filters, Meta Tag Filters, Synonyms, Banners, Redirects, Analytics 90 days, Email & Chat, Advanced Third-Party Integrations, Rule-Based Merchandising); Enterprise $299 (starts per 50,000 records, custom plan, dedicated servers; Everything in Premium, 50,000 products, Standard & Custom Theme Support, Push Notifications, Personalization, API Access, Email/Chat/Phone, Personalized Onboarding). Standard and Premium: “Additional charges if product/impression limit exceeded”.

Merchant Feedback Patterns
Common positives: Hands-on setup and theme-matching help from support; customizable filters; suitable for large catalogs.
One-star patterns (all 8 read): cost at very large catalogs (2: Feb 2024, Aug 2023); theme changes/broken search left after uninstall (2: Apr 2021, Jul 2026); app not working / onboarding error / sync button failed (3: 2021, 2023, 2022 four-star-adjacent edit); unsolicited marketing emails (1: Jun 2026).
Developer replies: on 5 older critical reviews (latest April 2024); none on the two 2026 one-star reviews.
Missing Evidence / Questions
- Storefront rendering, search quality, typo tolerance, speed — untested.
- Where rule-based merchandising lives (not visible in Merchandising tabs; pricing page says Coming Soon) — qualified in article.
- Listing vs in-app plan-feature mapping conflict (synonyms/redirects) — article defers to in-app screen and tells readers to confirm.
- Whether product and impression overages stack — article phrases combined case conditionally.
Claims We Must Not Make
- That search is accurate, AI-driven results are better, or conversions improve.
- That the app works on every theme or never slows a store.
- That support meets its SLA or that uninstall leaves (or doesn’t leave) theme code.
- Any onboarding duration.
Thumbnail Concept (for the human reviewer)
A small shopper figure stands in a wide sunlit arcade of open market stalls that sort folded goods into neat, filterable rows; near the far end, a soft translucent turnstile meters the flow of people passing through, hinting that the path is open but counted. Upper sky: a large blurred pastel flame-shaped cloud derived from Sparq’s red flame mark, softened into a warm coral-pink haze. Muted cream, ochre, terracotta and dusty teal palette; warm afternoon light; 16:9; no text, UI or readable typography. Follow docs/image-style-guide.md.
Brand source: in-app Sparq logo (white flame on a rounded square), sampled #ED3A56 on 2026-10-14.
Thumbnail Generation Prompt
A soft, hazy vintage editorial fine-art oil painting on rough canvas, 16:9, 1792×1024 or larger, like an art-book illustration photographed from a physical painting. A wide sunlit covered market arcade: long rows of open wooden stalls hold folded cloth, shoes and bags sorted into neat bands of colour, suggesting goods already filtered and arranged. One small shopper figure walks the central aisle, off-centre in the lower left third. Further along the aisle, a pale translucent turnstile gently counts a loose trickle of hazy passers-by, so the path is open but metered. The whole painting must look visibly blurry and abstract, not just the background: broad brush masses, softened silhouettes, partially lost edges, no object resolving into crisp detail. Foreground moderately readable with soft edges; middle-ground stalls loose brush masses; background arches dissolve into warm haze and colour fields. In the open sky above the arcade’s far end, a large flame-shaped cloud about 20–25% of the canvas width, painted in a soft pastel coral-pink derived from #ED3A56 mixed with cream light, feathered and partly dissolving into the sky with varied opacity and low local contrast, as if formed naturally by the atmosphere, never a logo or sticker. Palette: warm cream, ivory, muted ochre, dusty yellow, terracotta, sage, dusty teal, muted brown. Warm late-afternoon sunlight from the right with long soft shadows. Large quiet negative space in the sky. Visible brushwork, canvas texture, pigment variation, natural imperfections, restrained contrast. One clear focal point that reads at small thumbnail size. No text, letters, numbers, signage, price tags, screens, UI, logos or watermark; no photorealism, no 3D render, no glossy digital painting, no detailed faces, no sharp edges.
Alternate (simpler)
A soft, hazy vintage impressionist oil painting on rough canvas, 16:9. A single small figure stands in a vast cream-and-ochre library-like hall where tall shelves of folded goods sort themselves into calm coloured bands, guiding the eye toward a bright open doorway. Thick loose impasto brushstrokes, low contrast, everything visibly blurred and abstract, background dissolving into warm haze. High in a tall window opening, a large feathered pastel coral-pink flame-shaped glow derived from #ED3A56, about a fifth of the canvas width, melting into the light like a hazy sun, never a logo. Muted terracotta, sage, dusty teal and ivory; warm afternoon window light; generous negative space. No text, letters, numbers, logos, signage, screens, UI or watermark; no photorealism, no detailed faces, no sharp edges. Output PNG.
