Merchant decision question: Can a merchant get Searchanise running without a developer, and which product-count plan does their catalog push them into?

Realistic scenario tested: Install Searchanise on a Shopify development store (14 indexed products, Dawn live theme), complete onboarding, choose the dev Free plan, then inspect the admin.

What was tested (all evidenced by screenshots, 2026-10-06):

  1. Welcome screen → “Start Tour”.
  2. Tour card 1 “Instant Search from the First Keystroke”: instant suggestions, typo correction, synonyms, voice search, redirects, AI-powered personalization (developer claim).
  3. Tour card 2 “Search Results That Work for You”: built-in/custom filters incl. slider and location-based filters; filters per collection; sync with Shopify collection sorting; product cards with quick action buttons, variants as individual items, widget look and feel (developer claim).
  4. Tour card 3 “Boost Sales with Smart Merchandising”: rule-based ranking, banners on search/collection pages, product labels (developer claim).
  5. Tour card 4 “Insights That Drive Growth”: top queries, no-results searches, product clicks, filter value combinations (developer claim).
  6. Question: feature needed most — Smart Search / Product filters / Merchandising tools (all ticked by reviewer). Note says answers personalise features, marketing materials and setup hacks.
  7. Question: store category dropdown (long list incl. Health & Beauty Store).
  8. Question: number of employees (“Just me” selected); says answer helps find best subscription plans.
  9. Mailing preferences: feature/discount emails; monthly analytics reports; essential service emails still sent; changeable in Settings. Both boxes shown ticked — not established whether that was default, so not claimed.
  10. “Enable app on your themes” (Important!): select theme (Dawn, Live); Enable app opens Theme Editor with app block enabled; click Save; return and check “App activated”. Red “You haven’t activated Searchanise on your theme!” shown while Next button available.
  11. “Let’s get started”: GDPR/CCPA statement; Terms, License Agreement, Privacy Policy, DPA.
  12. “Dev subscription”: Free $0, “free solution for your dev store with all the basic functionality”; up to 2M products, filters on collections, instant search, search results widget, merchandising, analytics, integrations, custom CSS & HTML, AI personalization, real-time sync; basic email support.
  13. Dashboard: Indexation + Force re-indexation; menu Dashboard, Analytics, Search & Navigation, Filters, Merchandising & Promo, Sales Engine, Integrations, Translations & Texts, Plans & Billing; header New version, View all plans, Help Center, Settings; “Try the new design” card (settings in either admin apply to storefront); Search Engines row (store name, API key — redacted), Display Up-to-date; App status On, active on live theme Dawn; Quick Start; Separate variants promo carousel; customer success stories block.
  14. Plans (live-store table): Free $0 up to 25 (dev and standard store types); Basic $16 (19) up to 1.5k; Essential $33 (39) up to 7.5k; Advanced $74 (89) up to 15k; Growth $116 (139) up to 30k, Most popular; Pro $174 (209) up to 50k; Premium $291 (349) up to 300k; billed annually. 14 indexed products now. Rows: Base features all ✓; Real-time sync ✗ Free; AI Personalization all ✓; Separate variants (Boost tag) Growth+ only; Filters on Collections all ✓; Integrations ✗ Free; Custom CSS & HTML all ✓.
  15. Analytics overview (Oct 1–31, 2026): all zero; cards total clicks, total searches, total 0 results, total cost of clicked products, total filters applied, total cost of products bought; tables top search queries, top clicked products, top search with no results, top bought products; submenu Overview, Search, Collections, Export, Settings.
  16. Instant search widget: Preview changes box; tabs Template & Style, Content, Sticky Widget, Product Labels, Custom CSS & HTML; template “Multi column: Big pictures”; Apply changes. Submenu: Instant search widget, Suggestions dictionary, Search results widget, Preferences, Synonyms, Stop words.
  17. Filters: tabs Filter list, Search filter tree, Settings; filters Vendor, Tags, Size (Product option, Size appearance), Product type, Price, Discount, Color (Product option, Color appearance), Collections, Availability (list continues below crop — count not claimed); displayed values 50 (Price “-”); Add filter; submenu Filters, Filters on collections, Color families.

What was not tested: storefront search/filter output; search accuracy, typo tolerance, voice search; merchandising rules, banners, labels; Sales Engine; integrations; new admin; paid plan/billing; page speed; mobile; support.

Testing limitations: development store with 14 products and no traffic; dev Free plan differs from live-store Free; screenshots carry the reviewer’s red highlight boxes.

Merchant Feedback Patterns (paraphrased, not for quoting)

Common positives (recent, Aug–Sep 2026): responsive, technically capable support; help with custom requests and customisation; long-term users; value for money.

Common complaints (1–3 star, 2023–2026): search missing relevant products for some queries; support slow or unhelpful in some cases (incl. indexing errors, 2026); outages incl. peak sales days (2024 reports); setup/customisation needing technical skill; limited collection-page/product-card design control; isolated billing/refund and access disputes. Developer replies to nearly all reviews.

Editorial Evaluation

Strengths

  1. Filters pre-populated after indexing.
  2. Clear onboarding with an explicit theme activation step.
  3. Instant search templates with live preview; synonyms/stop words/suggestions dictionary.
  4. Zero-result search analytics.
  5. Product-count pricing keeps small/mid catalogs cheap.

Limitations

  1. Next button available while app not activated on theme.
  2. Live-store Free capped at 25 products; lacks real-time sync and integrations in-app.
  3. Separate variants gated to Growth ($116/mo annual).
  4. Classic and new admins side by side.
  5. Public reports of search gaps, past outages, technical setup for custom designs.

Best Fit

Small to mid-sized catalogs (hundreds to several thousand products) wanting search, filters, analytics and merchandising in one app.

Poor Fit

Tiny catalogs covered by Shopify Search & Discovery; small catalogs needing separate variants; heavily customised themes without dev help.

Thumbnail Concept & Prompt (to be supplied by the human reviewer)

Concept: A shopper stands at a long market counter piled with unsorted goods. A single beam of light picks out a neat path through the clutter to one item, while the rest of the counter softens into haze. In the upper sky, a soft swirl derived from Searchanise’s verified green mark appears as a pastel green cloud formation, feathered and partly dissolved.

Prompt: Editorial fine-art oil painting, vintage art-book illustration style. A small lone shopper stands before a long market counter heaped with unsorted goods; a soft beam of afternoon light picks out a clear path through the clutter to a single item, while the rest dissolves into haze. In the upper sky, a large soft circular swirl formed from clouds and haze, tinted a pale pastel green softened into cream light, about 20–25% of the canvas width, with feathered, partially dissolved edges, varied opacity and low contrast. The whole image must look visibly blurry and abstract: soft focus, broad brush masses, imperfect edges, visible brushwork, canvas texture, pigment variation. Muted palette of warm cream, ivory, beige, ochre, dusty teal, sage, terracotta and muted brown. Soft directional afternoon light, long gentle shadows. Wide 16:9 asymmetrical composition with generous negative space and one clear focal point. No text, no letters, no numbers, no UI, no logos, no readable typography. No photorealism, no 3D render, no glossy digital painting, no hyper-detail, no neon.

Note: verify Searchanise’s logo color from an official brand source before generating; the screenshots show a green square mark with a magnifier.
