Human Testing & Evidence

Testing level

  • Level 2 — Partial Hands-On Test

Merchant decision question: Is Prefixbox’s Free plan enough to run a live store, and if not, is the jump to $139/month Essentials worth it?

What was tested: Admin inspection on a Shopify development store, Free plan, immediately after install (initial catalog sync in progress).

What was not tested: Core/module embeds on a theme, storefront autocomplete/search/collection filters, AI agent, promotions/redirects/synonym editors, Search & collection pages and Autocomplete config tabs, analytics with traffic, search quality/speed, paid trial, support contact.

Raw observations (from screenshots)

  1. Home: blue banner “Product catalog sync in progress”; initial sync progress bar; catalog will sync daily or more frequently depending on plan. Baseline Research (seen 2026-10-14)

  • Launched 2023-12-13; Built for Shopify: yes (FAQ: earned in 2025). Category: Search and filters. Language: English.
  • Rating 5.0 from 59 reviews; 5★ 59, 4★–1★ 0.
  • Works with: Shopify Admin, Judge.me, Junip, Latori Best Price Indicator, REVIEWS.io, Swym Wishlist Plus, Yotpo.
  • Listing features: predictive search bar, dynamic filters, theme-editor customization of tiles and UI, Shopify Plus and Markets support, AI chat (discovery, recommendations, support automation), AI (vector) search, merchandising overrides/promotions, metaobjects/metafields/product options.
  • Listing pricing (USD, billed every 30 days): Free (500 searches, 1,000 products, 15 chats, 5 synonyms, 5 redirects, 3 promotions, unlimited filters, no direct support); Essentials $139 (indexing every 3h, 90-day analytics, design customization by Prefixbox team, direct support); Standard $229 (2h, 180 days); Advanced $389 (2h, 365 days). Pro $849 NOT on listing (in-app only). 14-day trial on paid plans.
  • Counting (price-plans article + FAQ): search = search results pageview; category search = collection pageview; paging, sorting, filtering each add a pageview. Autocomplete keystroke counting not stated.
  • Over-limit behavior for search quota: not documented. Products above plan limit don’t sync and won’t appear on storefront (FAQ).
  • Trial: one per merchant; upgrading mid-trial keeps remaining days. Upgrade/downgrade from Account; old plan ends immediately. Downgrade requires deleting excess promotions/redirects/synonyms. No direct cancel — downgrade to Free or uninstall. Late payment freezes store. Each store needs own subscription.
  • Sync (catalog doc): Free 24h, Grow 6h (plan not seen in app), Essentials 3h, Standard 2h; Force sync; sync history and logs; hide out-of-stock (default on per FAQ); show variants separately; multi-market permission.
  • Install (docs): sync starts on install, most features work during sync; test on duplicate/non-live theme; Core embed first, then modules (Autocomplete, AI Search Engine, AI Collections Page) as app embeds; app blocks also available; re-activate Core embed on live theme; Theme overview shows status per theme; old search may need custom CSS to hide.
  • Theme requirement (FAQ): Online Store 2.0 / theme app extensions; vintage must upgrade.
  • Filter logic (FAQ): AND across filters, OR within; cannot be changed.
  • AI chat (doc dated 2026-08-25): Prefixbox agent core embed + Hybrid search toggle; resync 5–10 min; design, page exclusions, persona via support. Conversation definition/quota not documented.
  • Design help: listing says Essentials/Standard/Advanced; FAQ says from Standard. Conflict disclosed in review.
  • SEO (FAQ): doesn’t change product pages, metatags or sitemap (not used in review).

Merchant Feedback Patterns

Positives (30 newest read; all five stars): proactive onboarding team, design customization to match theme (sometimes within hours), better findability than Shopify default incl. catalogs with many similar listings, responsive named support staff.

Caveats inside positive reviews: one small bug fixed within hours; heavily customized theme needed visual adjustments; one reviewer still awaiting promised help; one reviewer not yet live (test theme).

Review timing: many reviews posted within days–weeks of install (e.g. 2 min, 8 min, 1 day, 3 days, 6 days, 19–20 days).

Developer replies: on most reviews; latest seen 2026-02-19.

Missing Evidence / Questions

  • What happens to storefront search when the monthly search quota is exhausted (blocked, fallback, overage?).
  • Whether autocomplete keystrokes count toward the search quota.
  • Pro plan direct support and design help (card bottom cut off; Pro not on listing).
  • Which plan includes design customization (listing vs FAQ).
  • Whether catalog limit counts products or variants.
  • Storefront quality, speed, AI agent behavior — untested.

Thumbnail Concept & Prompt

Concept: A small visitor walks through a long enfilade of sunlit gallery rooms. Each doorway they pass dims a little lamp set in a shallow pool of light on the floor, the free allowance being spent room by room. At the end of the enfilade stands a single tall, broad stone step up to a warmer upper gallery where a second figure waits with a lantern: the steep move to a paid plan with a team that helps. In the upper sky, Prefixbox’s round speech-bubble mark appears as a pale navy-periwinkle ring of cloud with a small soft notch, feathered and partly dissolved.

Prompt: Editorial fine-art oil painting, vintage art-book illustration style. A long enfilade of quiet, sunlit gallery rooms recedes into the distance through a sequence of open doorways. A small visitor figure walks through them; behind the figure, small floor lamps by the doorways they have passed have faded to a dim glow, while those ahead still glow softly. At the far end, a single tall, broad stone step rises to a warmer upper gallery where a second small figure waits holding a lantern. Through a high open roof at the upper left, a round ring of cloud with a small soft notch on its lower edge, like a gentle speech-bubble shape, floats in the sky, tinted a pale navy-periwinkle softened into cream light, about 20–25% of the canvas width, with feathered, partially dissolved edges, varied opacity and low local contrast, painted with the same brushwork as the sky. The whole image must look visibly blurry and abstract, not merely a blurred background: soft focus, broad brush masses, simplified shapes, imperfect edges, visible brushwork, canvas texture, pigment variation. The foreground doorway and visitor are moderately defined but soft-edged; the middle rooms are loose brush masses; the far step, upper gallery and sky are very soft atmospheric fields of colour. Muted palette of warm cream, ivory, beige, muted ochre, dusty yellow, sage, olive, terracotta and muted brown, with the pale periwinkle emblem as the only cool accent. Warm afternoon window light from the left, long soft shadows across the floor. Wide 16:9 asymmetrical composition, visitor off-centre, generous negative space in the upper area, one clear focal point that reads at small thumbnail size. No text, no letters, no numbers, no UI, no screens, no logos, no signage, no readable typography. No photorealism, no 3D render, no glossy digital painting, no hyper-detail, no perfect faces, no neon, no saturated blue.

Brand verification: in-app icon in the reviewer’s Shopify admin screenshots is a deep navy circle with a white rounded speech-bubble/search shape. Official logo file colour not independently verified — confirm against prefixbox.com before final generation. The pastel periwinkle is a softened interpretation, not the official logo.

The generated sky emblem reads as a white cloud ring around blue sky rather than the prompted navy-periwinkle tint. Alt text recorded in the review frontmatter.

Claims We Must Not Make

  • What happens when the search quota runs out.
  • That autocomplete keystrokes count (or don’t).
  • That support is fast for every merchant, or that Free merchants get onboarding help.
  • Specific merchant store names or quoted review wording.
