Human Testing & Evidence
Testing level
- Level 1 — Full Hands-On Test
- Level 2 — Partial Hands-On Test (provisional)
- Level 3 — Demo and Documentation Review
- Level 4 — Research-Only Evaluation
- Level 5 — Insufficient Evidence
Merchant decision question (provisional, awaiting reviewer confirmation): Can a small Shopify store get Okendo’s review collection and on-site widgets live without a developer, and what does the Free plan actually let you ship before a paid plan becomes necessary?
Realistic scenario tested: A small store installing Okendo on a development store, choosing self-install, completing the five-step onboarding, enabling the App Embed and adding the Star Snippet + Reviews Widget blocks in the theme editor, opening Okendo’s admin, and activating the Free plan.
What I tested (evidenced by screenshots 1–7 and reviewer statements): installation type (Self-install chosen), configure colours, widget install instructions, import step, reviews publishing rules, Okendo admin Moderate Reviews in Preview Mode, Settings → Plan page in Preview Mode, App Embed enabled + app blocks added (reviewer confirmation, no screenshot), Free plan chosen (reviewer confirmation) after which Preview Mode banner disappeared (reviewer statement, no screenshot). Reviewer states all settings screens were opened but not captured; no specifics recorded, so the article makes no claims about them.
What I did not test / not evidenced: storefront product-page render of widget or star snippet; Send test email / review-request timing settings; live review request; review submission; moderation of a real review; import of a file; Loyalty/Referrals/Surveys/Quizzes; Google snippets; integrations; support; page speed; Custom CSS.
Testing limitations: Time taken not recorded and not stated. Theme not recorded. Store name not visible in any capture. Reviewer’s statements ‘Free — banner did not disappear’ (round 1) and ‘after activating free plan, preview mode banner disappeared’ (round 2) are reconciled as: banner present after onboarding and on the Plan page BEFORE choosing Free; banner gone AFTER choosing Free. Post-activation state not captured.
Raw observations / experience: Reviewer supplied screenshots and short answers only: ‘Proceed either way’ (approval), ‘Free. Preview Mode banner not disappear’ (pre-activation), ‘Yes’ (App Embed + blocks), ‘Installation type: Self-install Okendo’, ‘after activating free plan, preview mode banner disappeared’, ‘I have tested and opened all the settings just didn’t take screenshots.’ No written UX judgment supplied; the article’s judgments are drawn from the screens themselves and are flagged for reviewer fact-check.
Evidence Inventory & Public Authenticity Plan
Five screenshots received 2026-09-22 (all carry reviewer red annotation boxes).
| # | Screen | What is visible (observed) | What it could prove | Publish? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Shopify admin → Okendo onboarding → Configure colors | Brand color #0E7A82, primary text #2C3E50, secondary text #676986; auto-generated 6-swatch palette plus text/neutral rows; live widget preview (3.5★, “Based on 4 reviews”, rating bars, “100% would recommend”, photo strip, Filters and Write a Review buttons, “4 reviews”, Sort / Photos & Videos). Installation type step shows a green check. | Colour setup is a three-field job with a live preview; no CSS needed at this stage. | Candidate — core setup workflow |
| 2 | Onboarding → Widget install instructions | “Install Okendo Widgets on your storefront”: 1) Enable Okendo’s App Embed, 2) Install widgets: add Star Snippet and Reviews Widget to product page; link to app-block guide; info box: non-OS 2.0 themes use manual installation guide; Continue button. Installation type and Configure colors show green checks. | Widget install is not done for you inside onboarding; it is a set of instructions pointing to the theme editor. | Candidate — key friction/decision point |
| 3 | Onboarding → Import reviews | “Welcome to Okendo! Let’s get you up and running. 4 of 5 tasks completed” progress bar; “We support importing review exports from many other providers without modification”; link to reviews import guide; CSV drop zone; Skip this step button. Import reviews tab shows green check. © 2026 Okendo Pty Ltd. | Migration is offered at onboarding; provider exports accepted without modification (developer claim on screen). | Candidate — only if migration is part of the merchant question |
| 4 | Onboarding → Reviews publishing | Auto-Publish: “Enable auto publish” checkbox unchecked; info box: “Informed by recent guidelines from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), if reviews are blocked from auto-publishing by either the star rating or sentiment controls they will stay pending for 14 days before being automatically published. To opt-out of this behavior, please contact support.”; Minimum star rating for auto-publish: 4 (greyed); Block unverified (off), with media (off), with profanity (on), negative sentiment (off) — all greyed while auto-publish off; Profanity Filter: Use default Okendo profanity list (on). | Moderation default is manual; the 14-day forced-publish rule is disclosed in-product and the opt-out route is support, not a setting. | Strong candidate — original finding |
| 5 | Okendo admin (app.okendo.io) → Reviews → Moderation | “Moderate Reviews”; filters Status Pending / Rating Any / Sentiment Any / Products All / Date Submitted All Time / Advanced; purple banner: “Okendo is currently in Preview Mode. Our widgets will not display reviews on your live store until you select a billing plan.”; empty state “No Pending Reviews Found”; left nav: Reviews, Profiles, Mail, Surveys, Quizzes, Loyalty, Referrals, Insights, Settings; Reviews sub-nav: Moderation, Products; Questions: Moderation; Insights: Performance, Signals; Configure: Response Form, Attributes, Rewards, Groups, Settings; Foursixty: Sign Up; bottom-left red card “Preview Mode — Activate a plan to start”; user initials RH. | Finishing onboarding is not the same as being live; a billing plan (possibly including Free) must be selected before widgets show reviews. Also shows the full platform scope beyond reviews. | Strong candidate — overview + most important boundary |
| 6 | Onboarding → Installation type (step 1) | “Select your type of installation”: (a) Self-install Okendo — “Install Okendo yourself by following our helpful articles”; (b) Email installation instructions to your developer or agency; (c) Let the Okendo Support Team do the installation for you — “This service is included on our Growth Plan and above”. Progress “4 of 5 tasks completed”; Installation type shows green check. Reviewer chose Self-install. | Done-for-you installation is a Growth-plan ($119/mo) benefit; Free and Essential merchants install themselves or via their own developer. | Strong candidate — plan boundary |
Reviewer answers, round 1 (2026-09-22):
- Shemanto topic approval: reviewer said “proceed either way” — approval status NOT confirmed; recorded as unresolved.
- Plan: reviewer selected Free; the Preview Mode banner did not disappear afterwards. Exact activation steps (Settings → Billing → Free → Shopify approval) and whether Shopify’s approval screen appeared are pending clarification. Note: test store is a Shopify development store, which may affect billing activation — do not state a cause without evidence.
- Theme editor: reviewer confirmed App Embed enabled and app blocks added (“Yes”). Storefront outcome pending.
- Installation type: Self-install.
| 7 | Okendo admin → Settings → Plan | Page title “Plan”; Free card marked “Recommended”: “For stores that are just getting started”, 50 orders per month, Choose Free; Essential $19/mo, 200 orders/month, 14 day free trial; Growth $119/mo, 1,500 orders/month, 14 day free trial; Power $299/mo, 3,500 orders/month, 14 day free trial; Settings nav: User, Plan, Early Access, Mail, Integrations, Import/Export, Custom CSS, Rewards; sidebar red card “Preview Mode — Activate a plan to start displaying reviews.” | In-app pricing matches the listing; Free is the recommended default; app is still in Preview Mode on the Plan page before choosing. | Published — pricing section |
Public selection (5): #5 → What Okendo Offers; #6 → Who Installs the Widgets; #2 → Widget Installation Is Instructions; #4 → Moderation Defaults; #7 → Pricing and Value. #1 (colours) and #3 (import) kept internal; colours described in prose.

Public evidence safety
- Sensitive information: no store name, email, or customer data visible in any capture; only the reviewer’s own initials “RH” appear (screenshots 5 and 7). Not redacted; low sensitivity.
- Selected screenshots came from the actual test session.
- Public screenshots represent the pre-activation state (Preview Mode) on 2026-09-22; the article says so explicitly.
- No screenshot included merely as decoration.

|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | up to 50 | Automated Review Request Emails, Smart Review Form, Review Rewards Engine, Review Displays, Google SEO Snippets, Review Grouping, Review Moderation |

okendo.io/pricing does not print prices; it shows order-volume brackets (0–200, 201–1,500, 1,501–3,500, 3,501–10,000, 10,001+), platform bundles, and states that above the plan limit a merchant can upgrade or buy a one-off “top-up” of order credits. Top-up price is not published there. Third-party blogs quote an “Advanced $499” tier; it is NOT on the Shopify listing, so do not use it.
Listing does not spell out what Free lacks beyond the tier bullets (e.g. branding, attributes, media). Do not claim Free-plan exclusions the listing does not state.

Refresh — 2026-10-14
Score-improvement pass requested by the reviewer (Rakibul H. Rocky). No new hands-on testing or screenshots; all additions are re-verified public sources or analysis, attributed in the article.
Re-verified (2026-10-14):
- Listing: 4.8, 1,431 reviews (1,366 / 24 / 7 / 3 / 31). Plans and prices unchanged (Free $0 50 orders; Essential $19 or $204/yr, 200; Growth $119 or $1,308/yr, 1,500; Power $299 or $3,288/yr, 3,500; 14-day trials on paid). Launched June 12, 2018. Built for Shopify badge not shown in the header (was recorded on 2026-09-22) — removed from the article entirely pending browser confirmation; no badge claim either way.
- okendo.io/pricing: no prices; Reviews tiers named Essentials, Growth, Power, Advanced, Enterprise; no Free plan shown; brackets 0–200 / 201–1,500 / 1,501–3,500 / 3,501–10,000 / 10,001+; FAQ: upgrade or buy a once-off top-up of order credits; top-up price and behaviour if neither is chosen not stated; reviews belong to merchant and can be exported.
- Okendo marketing blog (Smile vs Okendo, data “as of April 2026”) says “Okendo does not charge overage fees at any tier” — loyalty-focused; not used in the article.
- Help centre, sequences: order must be PAID and FULFILLED; cancelled/refunded/no-email excluded; each order recruited once → one request email; one sequence running at a time; started with a Start button; WAIT from fulfilment or delivery (delivery needs an app such as AfterShip, else fulfilment); separate international wait. Default wait days not documented.
- Help centre, emails: reminder = second Review Request send block in the sequence using a duplicated email; no plan restriction stated; Question Answer email labelled Growth.
- Help centre, lookback: retroactive requests, most recent order per customer, excludes refunded and already-reviewed; whether lookback orders count toward the monthly limit not stated.
- Metafield removal: no official Okendo help article found.
- Entry tiers of other review apps (Shopify listings, 2026-10-14): Yotpo Free 50 orders / Starter $15 by order volume; Judge.me Free (no limit stated) / Awesome $15; Junip Free no caps / Core $29; Fera no free plan, Startup $9 for 100 requests / 200 orders, 60-day trial; Loox Free “up to 500 orders” (period unclear, so Loox excluded from the table).
Article changes: removed “carries the Built for Shopify badge” from intro; updated rating line; two new Key Takeaways (48¢/order at 250 orders; one request per order); new section “How Review Requests Work” (documented, untested, table); pricing: okendo.io omits Free, budgeting table by order volume with yearly-billing equivalents and per-order cost; Preview Mode paragraph kept; new “Launch Checklist After Onboarding” (six steps incl. exit); public sources updated (metafield complaint edited 2026-10-05, 1 of 10 newest 1–3★ with public developer reply, 41 of 1,431 ratings ≤3★); What Could Be Better expanded; alternatives entry-tier table; Final Verdict recommendation rewritten as four order bands; two FAQs (cost, reminders). Trimmed repetition to keep plain-text word count at 2,953 (publicationQuality depth band 1,200–3,000) and Flesch 64.
Merchant Feedback Patterns (Shopify App Store, sampled 2026-09-22)
Update 2026-10-14 (newest and 1–3★ re-sampled): No new 1–3★ reviews since 2026-09-22. The metafield review (Bliss Energetics) was edited 2026-10-05: “It takes MONTHS to get them to remove their metafields from your site. We are STILL fighting this.” Of the ten newest 1–3★ reviews (Jan–Oct 2026), only one (Feb 19 404 error) carries a public developer reply. Newest 5★ (Sep 22–Oct 9, 2026) mostly praise individually named customer-success staff, polished widgets and easy Shopify setup; one (Sep 23) notes basics are easy but getting the most out of Okendo needs work with a rep.
Common positives (newest reviews, mostly 5★): support staff named individually and praised; onboarding/CSM help on higher tiers; clean widget appearance; Google star-rating integration; intuitive admin. One 4★ (Sep 21, 2026, 1 month) said onboarding needs improvement.
Common complaints (1–3★, Jan–Aug 2026): support limited to documentation on lower tiers unless upgraded; review request emails not activating for weeks (Jun 5 and Aug 12, 2026); star ratings not displaying on site (Aug 12); metafields that cannot be removed and block Shopify’s duplicate-product feature, with removal taking weeks (Aug 25); loyalty bugs around points/store credit/refunds/tax unresolved for months (Aug 17); billing continuing after cancellation and cost vs ROI (Mar 10); 404 on install (Feb 19, developer replied). Reviews at 1★ are 2% of the total.
Sources reviewed: Shopify App Store reviews page sorted newest and filtered 1–3★.
Missing Evidence / Questions
- RESOLVED: Free selected; Preview Mode cleared after activation (reviewer statement).
- RESOLVED: App Embed enabled, blocks added (reviewer statement). Storefront outcome NOT captured — article makes no render claim.
- RESOLVED: Installation type = three options; support install Growth+.
- OPEN: review-request email defaults not captured — disclosed as untested.
- OPEN: time taken, theme — not recorded, not stated.
- OPEN for fact-check: did the reviewer skip the import step or upload nothing? Article says “we did not run an import”.
- OPEN for fact-check: reviewer to confirm the article’s UX judgments match their experience.
- OPEN (2026-10-14): reviewer to confirm in a browser that the Built for Shopify badge is no longer on the listing header.
Human evidence that would raise the score (from 90 toward 95)
Hands-on authenticity (14/20) and Evidence/screenshots (9/10) cannot move without new first-hand evidence. On the existing dev store with Free active:
| Step for the reviewer | Screenshot to capture | Closes | Plausible gain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open a product page on the live storefront after Free activation (desktop + mobile) | Product page with star snippet + Reviews Widget (or empty state) | Storefront-render gap; demo-content question | Hands-on +2, Evidence +1 |
| Open Mail → sequence / review-request settings | Sequence with WAIT days, SEND email, Start/running state | Request default timing (currently documentation-only) | Hands-on +1, Original findings +1 |
| Place and fulfil one test order to own inbox; submit a review with a photo via the email | Received request email; review in Moderate Reviews | Full collect → moderate loop | Hands-on +2–3, Merchant usefulness +1 |
| Approve the review and view it on the product page | Published review on storefront | Display loop | Hands-on +1 |
| Record time taken and theme name | — (note only) | Two open limitations | Hands-on +0–1 |
Completing the first three rows would justify roughly Hands-on 18–19 and Evidence 10, a total around 95.
Editorial Evaluation
Strengths
- Install ownership is declared on step one (self / developer / Okendo on Growth+).
- Colour setup is three fields with a live preview, no CSS.
- Moderation defaults are conservative and the 14-day rule is disclosed on the settings screen.
- Free plan is real, recommended in-app, no trial timer; choosing it ended Preview Mode.
- Onboarding instructions match the help-centre install steps.
Limitations
- Onboarding ends with the app still in Preview Mode; plan selection is a separate Settings step.
- Widget install is manual on Free/Essential; Okendo’s alternative is the $119 Growth plan.
- Auto-publish minimum rating is a 14-day delay, not a filter; opt-out via support only.
- Top-up credit pricing not published.
- Essential (200 orders, $19) to Growth (1,500 orders, $119) is a large jump for stores in the low hundreds.
Best Fit
Small/new store under 50 orders/month comfortable with a theme-editor install; stores planning to add loyalty/referrals later.
Poor Fit
Stores wanting done-for-you install on a cheap plan; stores at 200–500 orders/month sensitive to the $19→$119 jump; stores needing verified media-review behaviour (untested here).
Alternatives to Consider
Judge.me (flat $15 paid plan — Blinto reviewed), Yotpo (Free 50 orders, Starter volume steps — Blinto reviewed), Loox (photo-first — Blinto reviewed).
Claims We Must Not Make
- How the widget renders on a product page, or whether demo reviews appear before activation.
- Review-request timing defaults, email delivery, or inbox rendering.
- Anything about Loyalty, Referrals, Surveys, Quizzes, integrations, Google snippets, or support quality from first-hand experience.
- Time taken to set up; theme used.
- Top-up credit price; an “Advanced $499” tier (third-party only, not on listing).
- Free-plan feature exclusions not stated on the listing (e.g. branding removal, media reviews).
Blinto Review Quality Score — Internal

| Quality area | Points | Max |
|---|---|---|
| Hands-on authenticity | 14 | 20 |
| Merchant usefulness | 19 | 20 |
| Research depth | 14 | 15 |
| Evidence/screenshots | 9 | 10 |

| Writing/editorial quality | 5 | 5 |
| Total | 90 | 100 |
Status: Blinto Standard (90–100) — re-scored 2026-10-14 (was 84, Publishable). This is an AI assessment of AI-revised work and should be confirmed by the human reviewer. Hands-on authenticity and Evidence/screenshots are unchanged; the +6 comes from merchant usefulness (+2), research depth (+1), balanced criticism (+1), original findings (+1) and decision clarity (+1), all from re-verified public sources and analysis. The score sits at the threshold: the hands-on steps listed under Missing Evidence are what would make it robust.
2026-09-23 — condensed pass. Article tightened from 3,634 to 2,893 words (18 → 14 minute read on blinto.co) at the reviewer’s request. No facts, images, disclosures, or claims removed; only repetition and long constructions cut. Hub automated publicationQuality score rose 84 → 87 (depth band). Scorecard above is unchanged.
Editorial Verdict Lock
- Verdict locked: Yes (2026-09-22, pending reviewer fact-check of first-hand statements)
- Merchant decision: Consider / Start on Free with conditions
- Best for: small stores under 50 orders/month able to do a theme-editor install; stores planning to add loyalty/referrals in the same platform
- Not for: stores wanting done-for-you install below Growth; stores at 200–500 orders/month sensitive to the $19→$119 step
- Verdict notes: Free plan is real and clears Preview Mode, but onboarding does not activate it and installation is self-service. Verdict must not change if Okendo becomes a prospect.
Founder Intelligence — Internal
Recorded after verdict lock. Internal only.
What the app does exceptionally well
- Declares install ownership on step one instead of surprising merchants later.
- In-product FTC disclosure on the publishing screen is unusually transparent.
- Free plan positioned as “Recommended” — low-friction entry into a multi-product platform.
Merchant friction discovered
- Onboarding progress bar completes while the app remains in Preview Mode; plan activation is disconnected from the onboarding flow.
- Widget install is documentation-driven on Free/Essential; storefront verification is left entirely to the merchant.
- Merchant reviews (2026) report documentation-only support on lower tiers, review-request emails not activating for weeks, star ratings not showing, and leftover metafields blocking Shopify’s duplicate-product feature.
- Top-up credit pricing not published on okendo.io/pricing.
Growth opportunities
- Add a “Choose your plan” step (or a post-onboarding prompt) so Free activation is part of the checklist — likely reduces “reviews not showing” support tickets.
- Publish top-up pricing; the Essential→Growth gap is where merchants churn to flat-price apps.
- An in-app “verify on storefront” check after app blocks are added.
Product opportunities
- Post-install storefront detection (App Embed on? blocks present?) with a status indicator, similar to the friction merchants report about star ratings not appearing.
- Metafield cleanup on uninstall (recurring 2026 complaint).
Questions for the founder
- What share of Free installs never activate a plan and remain in Preview Mode?
- What does a top-up cost per order on each tier?
- Is the 14-day forced-publish opt-out tracked, and how often is it requested?
Blinto fit
UX opportunity — the onboarding-to-activation gap and the self-install verification gap are both product-UX problems with measurable support-ticket impact; evidence is first-hand from this test plus consistent 2026 merchant complaints.

Editorial Thumbnail — Concept and Prompt (per docs/image-style-guide.md)
Concept: A small shopkeeper figure at a workbench assembling a simple wooden display frame by hand (self-install), while a finished frame hangs on the wall behind, still covered by a soft cloth (Preview Mode — not yet revealed). Large cream negative space above. In the upper sky, a blurred pastel-teal concentric-ring formation (Okendo’s ring mark reinterpreted as haze), roughly 20–25% of canvas width.
Prompt: Editorial fine-art oil painting, vintage art-book illustration, 16:9. A small figure at a wooden workbench in a quiet, sunlit workshop, hand-fitting a simple rectangular display frame; on the wall behind, a second frame hangs covered by a soft draped cloth. Broad brush masses, visible brushwork, canvas texture, pigment variation, soft imperfect edges. Foreground softly defined, middle ground dissolving into hazy masses, background very soft and abstract with large fields of warm cream, ivory, muted ochre, and dusty teal. Warm afternoon window light, long soft shadows. In the upper sky, a large hazy pastel-teal formation of soft concentric rings, blurred and feathered into the atmosphere as if formed from light and haze, roughly a quarter of the canvas width, secondary to the scene. Muted restrained palette, quiet negative space, asymmetrical composition, off-center focal point. No text, no logos, no UI, no sharp detail, no photographic realism, no glossy digital rendering, visibly blurred and abstract overall.
